Agents are out Shopping

Somewhere right now, a piece of software that has never shaken a hand, never sat through a demo, and never once felt the quiet dread of a renewal call is deciding whether your company makes the shortlist.

In its August 2026 CMO Buyer Alignment Blueprint, IDC reports that 80% of B2B technology buyers now use AI agents to assist with or carry out buying tasks, and that 71% prefer digital channels even for complex, high-stakes purchases. Read that twice. The multi-stakeholder, six-figure decision that used to start with a phone call now starts with a prompt. The agent reads your site, your documentation, your pricing, your proof, and it forms a view long before a human on the buying side has opened your email.

Which has sent a lot of marketers into a familiar scramble: make everything machine-readable. Structure the data. Optimise for the crawlers that were never human to begin with.

That work is real, and  it’s the easy half of the story.

The machine reads first

Treat the AI agent as a new member of the buying committee. A tireless one, with no lunch break and no small talk. It skims faster than any human researcher, and it does not care how clever your homepage headline is if it cannot find what your product actually does.

So yes, your website has stopped being a brochure and become part of the evaluation infrastructure. Static PDFs and vibes will not survive contact with a buyer’s agent. This is table stakes now, the price of being considered at all.

Here is the trap. It is possible to win this half completely, to be the most legible, best-structured, most quotable vendor an LLM has ever parsed, and still lose the deal.

The human still signs

Buried in the same IDC research is the number of screenshots for LinkedIn: 88% of buyers say alignment between a vendor’s brand and their own values influences which supplier they choose.

The machine gets you onto the list. A person, usually several people, decides who comes off it. And they decide on the things an agent is worst at weighing: whether you feel trustworthy, whether your point of view is actually yours, whether the human on the other end will still pick up the phone when something breaks at 6pm. IDC’s own framing is blunt about it, human interaction now happens at precise, trust-building moments rather than as a warm-up act.

So the discipline splits in two. Get discovered by the machine. Get chosen by the people. Optimise only for the first and you become the vendor that keeps making shortlists and losing finals. Impeccably indexed and forgettable.

Two jobs and not a trade

This is where most conversations go wrong. They frame it as a choice, human warmth or machine efficiency, as if attention spent on one is stolen from the other.

It is two jobs that have to be done at once, and doing both at once is precisely what Digital Maturity means in 2026. The maturity is in holding both truths, the buyer arrives as a machine and decides as a human, and builds for both without letting either slide.

That is harder than it sounds, because the two pull in different directions. Machine-readable rewards structure, consistency, and volume. Human trust rewards judgement, restraint, and a genuine point of view. Optimise clumsily for the first and you flatten exactly the voice that wins the second. Sameness is legible. It is also invisible to a person deciding who to trust.

Real Digital Engagement lives in the tension between the two. It is content a model can parse and a person can believe. A site an agent can read and a buyer can feel something about. That balance does not happen by accident, and it does not survive being handed wholesale to either the machines or the interns.

The reality check

If your buyer’s agent formed an opinion of you this week, the honest question is not “were we findable.” It is “were we worth choosing once we were found.” Those are different problems. The first is engineering. The second is who you are. Only one of them can be fixed with better metadata.

The vendors who win the next few years will treat both as non-negotiable.

Essentiate was built for exactly this seam, where the machine-readable meets the human-decided. Our PIE Framework is deliberately Powered by AI, Delivered by people. We make your digital presence legible to the agents doing the first read, and unmistakably yours to the humans making the final call. Getting found is a solved problem. Being chosen never will be.
