Right now a marketing leader is scrolling through a dashboard that would have looked like science fiction five years ago. Website traffic, engagement rates, AI visibility, AI referral traffic, downstream actions, all lit up and updated in real time. It is a genuinely impressive wall of numbers. The CFO asks the one question that matters, which of these turned into revenue?
That is the finding of 10Fold’s 2026 research, “The Communications ROI Reset,” a survey of 400 B2B technology marketing and communications leaders conducted by Sapio Research. More than half say they now track a wider range of business-impact signals than ever before. Only 38% can tie any of it to pipeline or revenue. Just 35% have reporting that connects their channels at all.
More gauges, yet same blind spot
There is a comforting story the industry tells itself: that measurement is a maturity problem, and the fix is always more measurement. Add another dashboard. Track another signal. Bolt on AI visibility because everyone else is.
The 10Fold data quietly dismantles that story. The teams in the survey are not under-measuring. They are drowning in metrics and starving for meaning. More than 80% say measurement is already reshaping their strategy and budget decisions, yet under half, 49%, are very confident their data is accurate and complete. So the majority are steering the ship by instruments they do not fully trust.
This is what an immature Digital operation looks like in 2026. Not a team with too few numbers. A team with too many, and no line running from any of them to the money.
Activity is not impact
Here is the distinction the best operators have internalized and the rest keep blurring. Activity metrics tell you the machine is running. Impact metrics tell you the machine is producing something worth having. Most marketing dashboards are magnificent at the first and silent on the second.
Impressions, reach, traffic, even the shiny new AI-referral numbers, these describe motion. They feel like progress because they move. But Digital Engagement that never connects to a pipeline number is just expensive motion. And a team that cannot draw the line from what it does to what the business earns will, sooner or later, lose the argument for its own budget.
That is the real risk buried in the 10Fold report. When measurement gets more sophisticated but no more connected, marketing does not gain credibility with the C-suite. It loses it. Nothing erodes trust faster than a leader who can show you forty numbers and defend none of them.
A subtraction problem?
The instinct, when the dashboard fails to convince, is to add. Another tool, another metric, another integration. The 10Fold research points the other way.
The teams that will win the next budget cycle are the ones brave enough to subtract. To decide which handful of signals actually correlate to revenue and treat the rest is noise. To integrate reporting across earned, paid, social, and content, not so the dashboard is bigger, but so the story is coherent. To measure fewer things, and mean them.
That is a Digital Maturity move, and it is uncomfortable, because it means admitting most of what you were tracking never mattered. It is also the only version of measurement a CFO will fund twice. A clear read of where your Digital operation actually creates value, the kind a PIE Framework assessment is built to produce, beats a hundred metrics nobody trusts.
It was never the dashboard
Somewhere along the way, measuring became a substitute for proving. The dashboard became the deliverable. But no business was ever built on the completeness of its reporting. It was built on knowing which few things move the number, and doing more of exactly those.
The teams still adding gauges are answering a question nobody in the boardroom is asking. The teams that keep their budgets are answering the only one that counts.
Essentiate was built for the second kind of team. We are not here to hand you another dashboard or another vanity metric to feel busy about. We are the partner who reads your Digital operation honestly, finds the handful of signals that actually connect to revenue, and helps you prove it the first time, without the ten reporting rebuilds in between.
